I'm doing a research project for my A Level Media course, and my hypothesis is that fairytales are discriminative towards female characters. It is under
the category Women and Film so i'm looking into cinematic interpretations of fairytales rather than the actual stories. I have been looking at traditional
disney films such as Snow White and Cinderella as well as modern takes on fairytales; both childrens films such as Enchanted and Shrek, and darker films like

Associating psyical beauty with inner virtue isn't just a fairy tale thing--it's also, largely, Biblical. Christian teachings had a great deal of
influence on oral folklore (and written folklore, as the Grimms have shown us), and thus the "beauty = goodness" model became widespread after most
Europeans became Christian. This, combined with the Victorian standards I mentioned eariler, combined to form the passive and beautiful fairy tale heroines
that most of us are familiar...

I agree with AliceCEB--women are encouraged to believe that worth is linked to beauty. And this is also a feature in fairy tales--the heroines and good girls
are often portrayed as beautiful, their beauty being a reflection of their inner goodness. Consider 'Mother Holle' and the sisters--the kind maiden is
beautiful, and suceeds within the context of the story while the unkind girl is ugly and fails.

If you think fairy tales such as Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty are "misogynistic" you should look at the time period in which they were
popularized and the respective decades that Disney adapted them in. There are tons of folk and fairy tales with strong, clever, and resourceful female
characters, but they fell out of favor during the Victorian era. This was when passive female characters became the norm, because Victorian women were expected
to be quiet and decorative...

"Does beauty disqualify a woman to be a positive role model? "

Of course not. However when all positive role models are beautiful, it means that, by implication, not being beautiful is not as good. And the fact is, most
people are average looking--not ugly, but not gorgeous either. Yet it is hammered into us that, as a woman, to be worthy, you have to look like a model. And I
don't mean this only in the movies or on tv (both on regular tv shows and the news), but in...

I don't watch many movies, but it's interesting to note that until quite recently, many fairy tale heroine were strong and self-sufficient, and not all
male characters were, well, heroes. Neil Gaiman came out with a film called Mirrormask a couple of years ago, and it really stays closer to the older,
darker origin of fairy tales, though it takes place in modern times. I wouldn't characterize it as sexist at al' both the protagonist and antagonist
are female, and both...

I tend to agree that the fairy tale films I have seen tend to stereotype women's roles. All the female protagonists tend to be beautiful. Non-standard
beauty, or less-than-beautiful women are portrayed as flawed somehow, often relegated to side-kick role or to evil characters. But this is true of films in
general. (The less than beautiful heroine is rare-- the recent Miss Pettigrew Lives a Day being a delightful
exception, although even there, the...
