Hi everyone! I’ve never posted but I’ve been lurking for a very long time. I’m working on my master’s thesis, and I’m trying to pull together a collection of every version (in English) of ATU Tale Type 514: Change of Sex/Shift of Sex/The Girl Who Pretended to Be a Boy. I’ve got about 22, which is mind-blowing, honestly. It’s nearly impossible to track down all the extant versions for reasons I’m sure you all know. The most famous version of the tale, I think, is in Andrew Lang’s Violet Fairy Book, and is called “The Girl Who Pretended to Be a Boy”. A girl dresses as a boy, has adventures, is engaged to a woman, has a kerfuffle, and then changes sex to a man, and they live happily ever after. There is another, “Florinda”, include in Heidi Anne Heiner’s collection of Cinderella stories. The difference between this and the many cross-dressing fairy tales is that there is an actual change of sex at the end of the story. I’m asking for your help: has anyone got any versions of sex-change stories for me? I’d be indebted if you shared them. Once I get this thesis done, I’m going to share the list publicly so everyone can read these outstanding cross-dressing, gender-bending stories. I’ve got Greek, Armenian, Mexican, Spanish, Romanian, Arabic, Indian, Scottish and Albanian. There are quite a few tales listed in Uther’s index, but it looks like most of those texts have never been translated to English—but you never know! Thank you all so much—and also, yes, I have seen the two posts on this same subject from years past, and they were outstandingly helpful!
