World view, frame of mind, and perceptions of the nature of reality have a lot to do with "belief." I have found the more research one does into the field of the paranormal, the more obvious it is that it exists. Add to that a personal experience, and you begin to realize that if just one thing is true, you begin to realize that literally anything can be true. The three big stumbling blocks to accepting the otherness that shares our universe with us is conditioning, ignorance, and lack of experiencing something first hand. Once you get past those, the only other wall you hit is whether you want to accept it or not. That's a biggie. Most people stop right there, out of lack of interest, or fear of the unknown.

I used to be a skeptic with an open mind. Slowly, the more people I talked to and the more I read, the more problems I found with the logical answers, some of which are so convoluted they are far more ridiculous than just calling a ghost a ghost, or a faerie a faerie. I found professional skeptics, in their zeal to explain, would ignore the facts of a case and come up with anything to explain something.. They remind me of both atheists and religious zealots, both of whom are certain of answers they can't possibly have.

I would suggest this. Don't be a mindless believer anymore than a mindless skeptic. But if you want to be open to the poetry of Shakespear's quote from Hamlet; "There's more in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy," you're probably on pretty sure ground.
