I'm working on a series of illustrations based around curses and blessings in fairy/folk-tales. I'm trying to find some examples of both that are more
interesting than simple beauty or ugliness blessings/curses- such as the sisters who had jewels/snakes fall from her mouth when speaking after they
helped/insulted a witch, Karen who couldn't stop dancing in her red shoes, etc.
Any ideas? Thanks muchly

Diamonds and Toads is one of the variants of the
"falling from her mouth" fairy tales, and there's a whole list of variants here. Biancabella and the Snake includes similar blessings.
Vassillia the Beautiful succeeds against Baba Yaga because of her mother's blessing. In The Red Ettin, The King Of Lochlin's Three Daughters, and The Adventures of Covan the Brown-haired, the sons are offered the whole of a bannock with their mother's curse, or half with her blessing; the son who choses the first loses out and the son who choses the second succeeds; in The Girl and the Dead Man, the same thing happens with three daughters. Jack and His Comrades has a single son who takes the blessing. Jack and His Golden Snuffbox reverses that; the son succeeds despite the curse, but the tale is rather more cynical than the others. |

The Story of Catherine and Her Fate might interest
you. Catherine's fate to be miserable while young and happy in old age certainly acts as a curse and then a blessing.

Oh yes -- and The One-Handed Girl wanted her
father's blessing rather than his property; her brother wanted the property.
