Got this in an email, but I don't recognize it. Does anyone else? Thanks on behalf of the sender! Also, I am traveling and seem to be able to read my
surlalunefairytales.com email, but not reply on my decrepit notebook. So please don't expect replies to emails for a few more days.
I recently came across your website, and was impressed by the detailed
information assembled there. I was looking for a story which I believe
to have been based on sleeping beauty, but I cannot remember what it
was called, and I wondered if you might be able to identify it.
It was an illustrated story book, aimed at children or teenagers, as
it was quite dark. I looked in the section you have on story books and
illustrated novels, but I did not recognize it from any listed. The
illustrations from what I remember looked similar to those of Gerald
Scarfe, or Ralph Steadman, although I dont remember who did it.
The story took place in modern (ish) times, and was told from the
point of view of a young man about to be married. On the day before
his wedding he receives a scroll giving him directions to an island,
which after some difficulty eventually finds two sailors to take him
there. He makes his way through the forest, where he finds a tree he
thinks is covered by blossoms, but they are pieces of cloth from the
torn coats of many other men who came here, and all have died because
they turned back. He decides to continue, and he finds sleeping
beauty, and wakes her, only to go through the similar wedding
preparations.
I don't really remember how it ends, probably that he wakes up and its
all a dream etc, and I cannot for the life of me remember who wrote or
illustrated it, or what it was called, only that I read it when I was
about 10 (I am now 23) and I assume it was written within my lifetime.
Since you appear to be somewhat of an expert, I would much appreciate
any light you can shed on this vague description!
I understand, however, that this may be an impossible task.
