Can you help me find out which fairy tale is this? |

I remember when I was a kid watching a tv show where they retold fairy tales and fables (it was called "Papa Beaver's Storytime" if it helps).
One time, I remember seeing a story where a woman is being chased by a witch and she throws a comb behind her and it turns into a forest and I think she throws
a mirror behind her and it turns into a lake. There might have been a third thing but I can't really remember. I know the mirror and comb thing show up in
the revisionist fairy tale "Petronella" and I could be confusing the mirror back into the memmory of the initial story. Either way, I'm curious
as to where this whole transforming object thing comes from so can anyone let me know what story this could originally come from?

Can we help you find it? Probably not.
This is because it is so common a motif. It appears in The Mastermaid , The Water-Nix, Nix Nought Nothing, The Battle of the Birds, Snow-White-Fire-Red -- among others. |

Also the Russian tale Vasilisa the Beautiful. That one specifically had the witch Baba Yaga. As for the origins, mirrors and combs are feminine symbols, as
are forests and lakes. So in folklore, giorls often call on water and trees to help them by using household objects.

The problem with retellings is that they tend to change the details, making it even harder to track down. I can't recall the name of it, but it reminds me
of a story where a girl is given a number of gifts to help save her love. I think it might be a Grimm's story.
It's easier in this case to track it down by the TV show. It was produced by Cinar. Big Cartoon Database has this listing of episodes: http://www.bcdb.com/cartoons/Other_Studios/C/CINAR_Animation/Papa_Beaver_s_Story_Time/ It also helps when looking for info to actually give at least a decade as the when you "were a kid."

In my search for the original fairy tale, I have found that the Danish fairy tale "The White Dove" is almost exactly what I'm looking for except
the objects are different, a flower pot becomes a forest and a glass of water becomes a lake. Could this be the story that I'm looking for and is there
possibly a version of this story that has a comb and a mirror?

I believe it's called The Water-Nixie, the girl throws a brush and it turns into a brush-mountainwith thousand and thousands of spikes. She throws a comb
and it turns into a comb-mountain with a thousand times a thousand teeth and then she throws a mirror and it turns into a glass mountain that was so so so
slippery.
It's by The Brothers Grimm. |

This is funny. This is the same book that I am looking for. I used to play a game with my sisters that I was the little girl in the book. I wish I knew what it
was.
