Whether you find it useful or not, the ATU Tale-type index is a wonderfully bizarre document. Personally, I just love the surrealist potential of the individual motifs. A2034,+ Sparks of burning cannibal woman become mosquitoes? Why not? G522.2ยง, Giant drinks river dry, then transforms into teapots, cups, plates, buckets and other metal objects... What an odd thing for him to do. My department (the Folklore Institute of Indiana University) is hosting a conference this spring, and we want to have some merchandise available. I would love some of these little beauties on buttons. I am asking you, how can I choose 5 motifs out of the wealth of outlandish options? What are your favorites?
I might also ask if anyone has an updated index on hand... I don't believe it's online and I wouldn't want to be desseminating outdated motifs.
