Posts: 2 (02/24/09 10:04:45) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : fairytales, disney, cinderella, bbc, children39s, stories I am currently doing a research project on Cinderella- primarily, how Charles Perrault's fairytale "Cinderella" (created in 1729 and originally titled the Little Glass Slipper) has been adapted to suit modern audiences by the BBC and Disney in their own adaptions of the tale. I am wondering if anyone has any views on Cinderella-how the tale has been altered within modern adaptations- do you think the same values and morales run throughout? do you think Cinderella's charactor has altered? is the whole "being swept off your feet by a prince" ending even relevant to life today? and are children interested in that kind of ending anymore? Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreaciated, i just want to gather more of an insight into what other's think about Cinderella ( any adaptation)... Thanks! Kelly

Who makes the most money out of little girls today? The ones who peddle feministic toys or the ones who tell the little girls that they are princesses? Barbie has the perfect body, and the perfect boyfriend. The Disney "Princess" franchise is one of the most successful ever. Meg Cabot's Princess Diaries series sold millions. True, the heroines are more active today than they were fifty years ago, but little girls still dream of the prince on the white horse, and the wedding dress with a million pearls. The human psyche is not changed by culture but the other way around. Contrived cultural changes that contradicts the psyche will not last. The backlash against feminism did not come from conservative men. It came from the feminist's daughters.

Posts: 1 (04/02/09 18:42:32) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Well, for an answer to the whole, 'Are children still interested?' querie, please know that I absolutely love the feeling of a poor, mistreated girl getting exactly what she deserves, a break from the torture, and a chance to lead a new life, with her perfect Prince Charming. I am 12 years old, and I myself have read many alterations of Cinderella, my favorite being Ella Enchanted, by Gail Carsin Levine, with my 2nd runner up favorite Just Ella, (I cant remember the author off the top of my head just now), because they really give a background. But I just always love it when Cinderella (or any other alteration of that name) gets back with her step-family(preferably in a civilized manner), and finally gets treated like she is worth something more than just being a scullery maid. And I know for a fact that many other kids in my class also relish in the varied Cinderella tales, though maybe not as much as me. If you have any other questions about how the kids of my age enjoy reading these tales, just post a reply and I shall get back to you. With lots of hope for a good grade on your project, Nikki

Yes, backlash and 3rd wave feminism are a product of women's own dissatisfaction with gender roles and rights, but I hardly think this is something intrinsic to a mysterious monolithic "human psyche" that exists independently of and resistent to culture. How exactly do you think we are escaping culture or leaving it behind? Girls don't grow up with only the visible reminders of contemporary gender paradigms, we also get a lot of old movies, books, paintings and other forms of culture that idealize traditional femininity and make it seem fun and enviable. None of this goes away, and princesses are still popular because they are aggressively marketed to us. Traditional women's roles didn't come back into style because they're embedded in our psyche, they never really went away.
